Arequipa Wildfire Contained: A Call to Climate Awareness and Reforestation

Arequipa, September 13, 2025 – A large wildfire broke out around noon at the base of Peru’s Misti volcano, affecting the districts of Miraflores, Mariano Melgar, and Chiguata, and burning approximately 300 hectares of natural grassland. Thanks to a coordinated effort among emergency services, the fire was brought under control by late afternoon, with no casualties reported.
While the fire is now out, the environmental warning it sends is loud and clear.
Forests and grasslands are vital to climate regulation. Every wildfire releases carbon, erodes the soil, and weakens the ecosystems we depend on.
We urge governments, organizations, and individuals alike to prioritize reforestation, environmental education, and community action.
Nature can live without humans. Humans cannot live without nature.
